Variety characteristics, advantages and disadvantages
Setton is a medium late variety of onion. After germination, 110 days elapse before harvesting.
The main characteristics of the culture:
- round shape of bulbs with narrowing to the tail;
- narrow neck;
- the average weight of the fruit is 110 g;
- pen height - up to 45 cm;
- dense tan dry scale;
- juicy pulp of white color;
- Pleasant peninsular taste.
Setton is a two year old culture. In the first year, seeds are obtained from seeds, and turnip will only be available for the next year. This feature should be considered when choosing a landing method.
Setton was derived from another variety of onions, Sturon. The result of breeding was the following advantages:
- undemanding to soil features;
- high productivity - up to 6 kg per 1 sq. km. m;
- aging is almost 100%;
- high resistance to the formation of arrows;
- cold resistance - in the absence of snow, the culture tolerates temperatures well up to -15 degrees;
- high resistance to diseases;
- long-term storage - if properly organized, up to 7-8 months without germination and decay;
- good preservation of sevka - even during winter storage it does not dry;
- universality - onions are used fresh, for heat treatment, preservation.
Setton has no flaws. The need for certain conditions for growing is the norm for the cultivation of onions, therefore, it is not considered a minus.
Optimal conditions for growing
Setton is considered an unpretentious variety, but to obtain all its advantages, certain conditions should be provided:
- Well lit area. The beds should be located on an open level ground.
- Groundwater remoteness. It is better to organize beds on a hill or to make them high. With close occurrence of groundwater should take care of drainage.
- Optimum temperature. Setton should be planted in open ground when the air warms up to 12 degrees.
- Compliance with crop rotation rules. Onions should not be returned to their original place for at least 3 years. You can not plant it after other bulbs. For planting, it is good to choose the beds after cucumbers, nightshade, green manure. After garlic and carrots, the culture feels bad.
Setton can be grown on different types of soil, but to ensure a good crop, it must meet certain requirements:
- sufficient fertility;
- pH 6.5-7;
- moderate hydration.
Loamy soil is best suited for growing onions. During the digging in the fall, the introduction of organic matter is recommended. It can be rotted manure or humus. For 1 square. m 3-5 kg of fertilizer is required. Another option is potash-phosphorus fertilizers.
Landing
Setton is planted in open ground with seedlings or seeds. In each case, there are certain terms and features.
Seedlings
Growing Setton seedlings from seeds takes an average of 55 days. In the northern regions, they should be sown in the last week of March or the first week of April. For the southern regions and the middle zone, these dates can be shifted by 2-3 weeks.
You need to act according to the following algorithm:
- Culling planting material. It is necessary to soak the seeds in warm water for 3 hours. All specimens that have surfaced should be discarded, as they will definitely not produce seedlings.
- Disinfection. To do this, you need to prepare a solution of potassium permanganate. It should be light pink, be sure to wait for the crystals to completely dissolve. In a solution of potassium permanganate seeds must be kept for half an hour.
- Warming up. After soaking in a solution of potassium permanganate, the planting material should be washed and immersed in hot water for 40 minutes. The temperature should be no more than 45-50 degrees.
- Cooling. Seeds should be removed from hot water and immediately placed in the refrigerator or cold water. Enough half an hour.
- Seed germination. This step is optional, but allows you to speed up the process. Seeds should be placed in a damp cloth and periodically moistened. Before emergence, no more than a week will pass.
- Preparing containers for seedlings. You can use boxes or containers, peat tablets and cassettes are convenient.
- Soil preparation. You can buy the finished mixture or prepare it yourself. The earth should be quite loose. It is necessary to make grooves in it, deepening by 1 cm. Leave 4-5 cm between rows.
- Sowing seeds. They do not need to be deepened or tamped, it is enough to sprinkle with a centimeter layer of soil on top.
- Providing a temperature of 18-20 degrees. When the first shoots appear, the temperature regime must be reduced. The optimum daytime temperature is 14-15 degrees, and the nighttime temperature is 10-12 degrees.
- Watering. Watering seedlings should be plentiful, but without stagnation of moisture. Orient the frequency of watering to soil moisture. It is recommended to first water the seedlings 2-3 times a week, then 3-4 times a week.
- Fertilizer. After 2 weeks, seedlings will need top dressing. It is necessary to use liquid organics. After 2-3 weeks, carry out another feeding. This time use mineral fertilizers.
- Hardening. It should start 1-1.5 weeks before planting the crop in open ground. First, seedlings are enough to take out to fresh air for a quarter of an hour. At home, it can be marked on the open balcony or window. Gradually increase outdoor time.
Before planting seedlings, it is necessary to water it abundantly. The beds need to be prepared in advance - to loosen and level. Make grooves and water them well. Between the rows leave 20-30 cm.
Cutting of roots and leaves of plants is recommended. They should be shortened by a third. Gently plant bushes into the prepared grooves, keeping a distance of 10 cm between them. Carefully sprinkle with earth.
Onion sevkom
Sevkom Setton can be planted in spring or autumn. Spring planting should be done at a temperature of 12 degrees. Usually they occur in early May, and in the southern regions at the end of April. Landing work can be carried out immediately after the melting of snow, if you use additional agrofibre or film.
Winter sowing is carried out in October-November. The exact landing time depends on the climatic features of the region. It is necessary to land sevs 2-3 weeks before frost, when the temperature drops to 5 degrees.
Regardless of the selected sowing time, you need to prepare the beds in advance and proceed according to the following algorithm:
- Culling planting material. Only strong onions should be used without signs of disease or mechanical damage. It is recommended to sort planting material into 3 groups by size.
- Warming Set. Keep the material 1-2 weeks at a temperature of 40 degrees.
- Disinfection. Use a solution of potassium permanganate. It is enough to soak the sevoc for a quarter of an hour, after drying.
- Well preparation, deepening them by 4-6 cm. Between the holes should be left 10 cm, and between the rows - 25-30 cm.
- Planting Sevka. Planted bulbs should be sprinkled with earth.
For winter planting, cover material should be used. In the spring it can be removed with the onset of heat.
Outdoor crop care
Setton needs standard care, represented by a set of work.
Watering
Setton should be watered regularly. Watering is especially important at the beginning of the growing season before the onset of active growth of bulbs. It is recommended to water the crop once a week, and in the dry period to double the frequency of watering. m should spend no more than 10 liters of water.
Around the beginning of July, ripening of the bulbs begins. Watering should be moderate at this time.
2 weeks before harvesting, watering should be completely stopped.
Loosening and weeding
Thanks to loosening, the soil becomes breathable, and the moisture in it is retained longer. Loosen the soil regularly and at least once every 2 weeks. It is recommended to carry out such work after watering or heavy rain. Too deep to loosen the earth is not enough 3 cm.
Getting rid of weeds is a prerequisite for caring for any onion, including Setton. It is good to combine weeding with loosening. Work must be carried out as necessary.
Plant debris should be removed from the beds, and for the prevention of diseases and pests it is better to burn them.
Top dressing
In addition to fertilizing during the autumn digging of the site, several additional fertilizing is required after planting the crop in open ground. Fertilizers should be applied for the first time half a month after sowing. At this stage, it is better to use organics. It is better to use fertilizers in liquid form. m requires 1 liter of fluid.
The second top dressing is carried out 3-4 weeks after the first fertilizer application. At this stage, it is worth using mineral compounds. Ammonium nitrate and potassium sulfate are effective. m need 15 g of fertilizer.
Until the third feeding, you need to withstand the same period. This time, fertilizer should contain calcium.
During the month before harvesting, only natural fertilizers are allowed. Chemicals should be excluded during this period.
Pest and Disease Control
Setton can be affected by downy mildew, cervical rot, and rust. Affected specimens must be immediately removed and burned. The remaining plantings should be treated with fungicide.
Prevention of fungal diseases is copper sulfate. Spraying is carried out when the feather grows to 15 cm. It is necessary to dissolve 1 tsp in 10 l of water. substances and add 1 tbsp. liquid soap. This volume is enough to spray 20 square meters. m, only leaves need to be processed.
Powder dusting or spraying with tobacco dust will help to cope with a common pest onion fly. Mix it effectively with black pepper and ash.
Harvesting and storage
The best time for harvesting is the end of summer. The onion must ripen, but not sit out in the ground, so it is important to remember the ripening dates for this variety. A sign of the readiness of the crop for harvest is a mass lodging of the pen. For harvesting, you should choose good dry weather.
Keep the crop in a dry and warm place. The optimum temperature regime is from 0-4 degrees. The room should be ventilated, and the humidity level should not exceed 75%.
It is good to store Setton with grandmother's methods - knit braids, stuff nylon stockings. You can use a variety of containers - wooden boxes, cardboard boxes, special nets. Effectively and simply sprinkle the crop on the shelves.
Periodically, onions in storage should be inspected and disposed of damaged specimens. This reduces crop losses.
Growing Setton is no more difficult than other varieties of onions. Compliance with all the rules will ensure a good harvest and long-term storage. It is important to properly prepare planting material and prevent disease - some are found only when storing onions.
