Tall peas are not popular with gardeners, although they have many advantages. The reason is the average yield, the need to install supporting structures. But on the other hand, this allows you to save space in the garden.
Varieties of tall peas
There are many varieties of tall peas that have their own characteristics. Most popular tall varieties:
- Madonna It has an average ripening period and high productivity. Technical maturity occurs after 65-70 days. The height of the bush varies from 55 to 95 cm, a maximum of 2 flowers are formed on the node, the number of beans in the pod is average.
- Giant. Refers to the early variety, which ripens in a month and a half. It is considered a sugar sortotype with a stem length of up to 1.6-1.7 m. In one slightly curved pod there are up to 10 grains.
- Miracle Shovel. This is a mid-season peeling cultivar with a powerful long stem (up to 1.8 m). The grains are large and sweet.
- Rocket. The height of the bush does not exceed 90 cm, the yield is high, the type is mustachioed, late ripe (2-3 months).
- Telephone. Late peas have extended fruiting. The harvest begins in 100 days, so the crop is harvested for a long time. Beans are large, stem length reaches 2 m.
- Zhegalova 112 grown for more than 70 years, it belongs to the medium-ripened sugar variety. Milk ripeness of beans is achieved after 2 months. Stem length - 1.7-1.8 m, fruit length - up to 15 cm.
- Sugar Snap - sugar asparagus peas with a long stem - 200 cm. Beans are long, fleshy, with large shoulder blades.
- Alderman or Alderman. The bush grows to one and a half meters, the variety is characterized by high productivity, large pods.
Distinctive characteristics of tall peas
Tall peas, in contrast to other types of legumes, are characterized by a bush height of more than 115 cm. The maximum length of the stems reaches 250 cm. The variety is difficult to grow because of the need to let out a mustache on a support.
Light-loving plants, therefore it is forbidden to thicken seedlings. Many gardeners mistakenly believe that tallness makes it possible to plant seeds densely, but in the absence of sufficient light, the stems weaken and lie on the ground. Tying is done after the formation of 4 leaves. The fruits are usually large, fleshy and juicy.
Advantages and disadvantages
It is generally accepted that tall peas have average yields. This is due to the fact that not many ovaries are tied. But given the massiveness of peas and pods in kilograms, the yield can be considered high.
Other benefits:
- the plant is convenient to care for, as it is tied up;
- the size of the fruit simplifies the harvesting process;
- many varieties;
- bushes are not afraid of exposure to sunlight;
- watering and other agrotechnical features do not differ from caring for other types of peas;
- wide range of applications.
The main advantage for gardeners and gardeners - there is the possibility of ennoblement of a personal plot. Planting bushes along the fence, near the gazebo, home, etc., you can not only harvest, but also green the surrounding area, create an additional shadow.
There are also disadvantages. Among them, note the following:
- a large height of the bush, which creates additional difficulties when leaving;
- the mandatory need to create a supporting structure;
- since the stems and pods are massive and heavy, for horizontal support you need to choose durable materials (you can’t do with a thin rope);
- lack of ability to plant bushes often.
Fields of application
Tall peas are sugar and peeled. The first is used as food with the peel, the second - exclusively by grains. This allows you to expand the scope of the culture:
- Cookery - cooking soups, a variety of cereals, casseroles, salads, desserts, puddings, pies, pies, canned goods, etc.
- Cosmetology - manufacture of masks for face, hair and nails.
- ethnoscience - treatment of anemia, heart, circulatory system, diabetes, obesity and other diseases. Peas removes cholesterol and other harmful substances from the body, normalizes metabolism, accelerates all processes, strengthens the immune system.
Tall peas are stored in canned, frozen and dry form. Many peoples grind dried beans into flour, which is used as the basis for bread, pancakes, desserts, fritters, pasta.
Timing and landing technology
Tall peas are planted early - after the melt spring waters come off. The only requirement is air temperature not lower than +10 degrees. This is approximately the end of April - the beginning of May. Beans are not afraid of freezing, so with a short-term drop in temperature, you should not worry.
In the northern latitudes, culture is planted until the beginning of July. There is an important condition - warming up the soil. For this, a plot for planting peas is covered for several days with plastic wrap.
Features landing scheme:
- depth of seed laying - maximum 5 cm;
- double-row grooves (between two strips the distance is 15-20 cm, the distance between two rows is 50-60 cm);
- the distance between the peas in the same row is 6-9 cm.
Before planting seed, prepare the site, soil and peas. What to do with seeds:
- Discard unsuitable material - remove items with damage, stains, mold residues, etc.
- To remove hollow grains, you can pour peas into a saline solution (30 grams of sodium chloride per 1 liter of water). Stand for 20 minutes. Floated seeds are considered unsuitable.
- To speed up the process of hatching seeds during pre-soaking, peas are heated. There are two ways to do this.
In the first case, the grains are laid in a thermos, where water is poured at a temperature of 40 degrees. Insist half an hour.
The second option involves mixing hot water and boric acid (10 l 2 g). Soak for 5 minutes. Additionally, disinfection against diseases is carried out. - The next step is seed germination. They are laid out in water for 1-2 days, after which they are slightly dried and planted. You can use moistened gauze, in which planting material is laid for the same time.
- Modern methods suggest the use of dietary supplements to accelerate growth - Humate, Epin and the like.
Site selection
Tall varieties are very heat-loving and photophilous, so the place for planting should be well lit and ventilated. However, strong winds are excluded.
When choosing a site, observe the rules of crop rotation. You can not plant peas after all legumes. Recommended predecessors - potatoes, cabbage, cucumber, pumpkin, tomatoes. The peculiarity is that the proximity of groundwater (1 m or less) is excluded, since the root system of tall peas is exposed to putrefactive fungal diseases, which contributes to the death of the plant.
Preparatory Activities
For tall peas, the most fertile soil is required, so the site is fertilized well in advance - in the fall. What should be done:
- Dig a soil 30 cm apart, breaking up thick and large clods.
- To apply organic fertilizers - slurry, chicken droppings, compost or humus. Organics must be rotten and fermented, as legumes perish from fresh manure.
- If the acidity of the soil is more than 6-7 Ph, be sure to normalize it. To do this, sprinkle wood ash or lime on the site.
In spring, it is advisable to add minerals - molybdenum, copper, boron, etc. Superphosphate (per 1 sq. M - up to 60 g), nitrate (10 g is enough) and potassium salt (up to 30 g) are an excellent tool.
Disembarkation procedure
The technology of planting tall peas:
- Use a garden tool to flatten the surface of the earth.
- Form grooves, fill them with water and wait until it is completely absorbed. You can put some compost in the grooves.
- Plant the germinated seeds to the required depth (the heavier the soil, the deeper the bookmark).
- Spread the soil on top and tamp it.
- Cover with non-woven material, which eliminates the risk of peeling grains birds.
Care Rules
Care for tall peas is reduced to compliance with the agrotechnology of growing legumes:
- Watering. Before the flowering period, watering the culture takes place once every 7 days, during and after flowering - twice a week. Waterlogging should not be allowed - the earth should not be soaking, but it is unacceptable to dry it.
- Weeding and cultivation. Procedures are carried out as necessary - when weeds and dry crust are formed on the ground.
- Fertilizer application. Top dressing is carried out 2-3 times during the growing season - before flowering, after flowering and after the formation of pods. Organics and Nitroammofoska are usually used, but other minerals may be added depending on the composition of the soil. The only exception is nitrogen, since pea crops accumulate in the root system.
- Pinch. It makes it possible to increase the amount of yield. For this, the tops are pinched, from which new lateral shoots then grow.
The most important rule for tall peas is a garter. Thanks to the procedure, the risk of infection with fungi and insect infestations is reduced. In addition, the plant receives enough light, heat and aeration.
There are several options for creating a supporting structure:
- Tying to a separate support. To do this, you will need wooden stakes or dry branches after trimming trees. Reiki is embedded in the ground near each bush. Pea stalks are directed counter-clockwise along the support - the vine should wrap around the stick.
- Hut. Install wooden slats at an angle to each other. Tie the upper part with a strong rope or pull it with soft wire. That is, an inverted V-shaped design should be obtained.
- Wigwam. Since the design is round, then peas will have to be planted according to a different scheme - around the hut. To begin with, a rail made of wood or metal is installed in the center. Other support stakes are driven into it at an angle, after which they are connected from above with twine. The lower part is also fastened with wire, wooden sticks, due to which the structure is strengthened, and the tendrils of peas have something to cling to.
- The tapestry method. At a distance of 1 meter, install wooden supports (metal, plastic). Attach a grid with large cells to them. An economical option - connect the trellis with a strong rope or wire in several rows (from bottom to top).
The height of the structure should not be less than the length of the stems (depending on the variety), but preference is given to elements up to 2 meters. Any support is better to install on the site before planting the seed.
Pest and Disease Control
Tall peas with strict adherence to agrotechnical requirements are rarely exposed to diseases. What diseases and pests are most common, and what are the methods of control and prevention:
- powdery mildew - treatment with fungicides (Skor, Fundazol, Topaz, etc.);
- Fusarium infection - destruction of affected bushes, prevention of soil waterlogging;
- rust - spraying with Bordeaux fluid;
- axochitosis - copper chloride;
- aphid;
- pea stalk;
- garden scoop;
- leaflet.
You can get rid of insects and prevent the invasion of pests using tinctures of garlic and tomato tops. In specialized stores, you can purchase the appropriate drugs based on chemicals.
Harvesting and storage
Harvest tall peas harvested as the beans ripen. The fastest growing pods are ripening from below, so you will not be able to collect all the fruits at the same time. If you plan to store peas with pods, be sure to use garden scissors to cut the fruit.
How to store peas:
- in the refrigerator (no more than a week);
- in dried form - drying is carried out in natural conditions (under the sun) or in the oven, storage in sealed containers;
- in the freezer - pack in a plastic bag and put in the camera;
- in the form of conservation.
Reviews of gardeners
Alexey Ivanovich, farmer, 48 years old. I have been growing tall varieties for many years, especially like Madonna and Phone - I get the maximum yield. The payback is good, as the products diverge "with a bang." The only minus of tall varieties - you need to put designs for weaving stems every year. I solved this problem a long time ago - I made reliable and durable structures that I do not disassemble in the fall, but simply transfer them to the room.
Olga, a housewife, 32 years old. I live in my house and say that there is not so much space in my yard, so I try to use every corner. Tall peas gave me the opportunity to decorate the site. I plant it around the gazebo and along the fence - this is original plus I also get the crop.
